If your son has access to a palm pilot I would recommend a program called "Converter v2.2" availalble at
http://www.mattmarsh.net/computing/palmpilot.shtml. This is a "Freeware" program that I use every day. I highly recommend it.
Another option, and perhaps a better one for the construction industry, would be one of the construction calculators put out by Calculated, Inc. They are available at most home improvement stores, like Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, Etc.
