If I have a 10,000 gallon pool and my chlorine test kit indicates i have 4ppm - can you tell me how many gallons of chlorine I have in the pool.

So we know that:
120,000 gallons of water = 1,000,000 pounds
1 ppm = 1 pound per 120,000 gallons of water
you need 4ppm for 10,000 gallons so:
10,000gallons/120,000=.08 pounds of water
.08 pounds of water x 4 (you need 4ppm) = so you have .33 gallons of chlorine in the pool.
I could be wrong but that is how I see the formula working out.

It's a lot simpler than that.
You have 4 parts per million. That means that if your pool held 1,000,000 gallons, it would contain 4 gallons of chlorine at 4ppm.
If it held one-tenth as much - 100,000 gallons - it would contain 0.4 gallons of chlorine.
If it held just one-tenth of that - 10,000 gallons, which is what you have - it would contain 0.04 gallons of chlorine.
