Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

You can't. Square feet is a unit of area, feet is a unit of length.

How can you say you can convert a square foot into a linear foot????? Obviously you've never worked in construction because a lot of plans list in square footage which has to be converted to linear footage when quoting certain areas of work!!!

Obviously!

With few excaptions (such as obtaining the circumference of a circle using the radius or a perfect square), you CANNOT obtain linear measurements (such as the perimeter) of an area with the square footage alone. To calculate the dimensions of a specific area, you need at least two dimensions.

IF this 3 square feet area were a rectangle and you knew the length of one side was 1 foot, you could calculate the adjacent side: 3 / 1 = 3, giving a perimeter of 8 feet. However, we don't have either the geometric shape or the second dimension.

While it is true that some bid items may be stated in square feet; 1) a width is usually specified somewhere on the plan set (usually stated as "typical") or 2) you have to scale the plans or read the specifications to obtain one or more dimensions. Somwhere, there is another dimension.

So . . . using no other dimensions, convert 3 square feet into linear feet!

3 sf is how many linear feet?
