You need to know density of the material

W (weight) = d (density) * V (volume)

I think you mean, how many gallons of oil in a 35-pound container of peanut oil, as sold for frying turkeys.

You would think this would easy to find out but I found very little information!

One source said vegetable oil is 7.5 pounds a gallon, which says 35 pounds is 4.7 gallons. I found another source that said 35 pounds is 4.3 gallons. All of the containers I saw at Smart and Final were in gallons or pounds, never both.

35 pounds of water would be 4.38 gallons and oil is lighter so it's definitely more than 4.4. I am going to guess 4.6 and bet that's pretty close.[/quote]

Peanut oil has a specific gravity of 0.92 at 60º F (Source: http://www.csgnetwork.com/sgvisc.html), so peanut oil weighs 7.68 pounds a gallon.

7.68 pounds * 35 gallons = 268.8 pounds at 60º F.

Pounds is a measure of weight.

Gallons is a measure of volume.

They are not compatible units.

You need to know what material you are talking about, with its unique properties (specifically, its density) before you can start looking at volumes and weights in any kind of meaningful relationship.

WHAT are you trying to find the weight of? 1.5gallons of....?

picture this...

you have a one gallon fish tank.
you fill it with feathers, how much does it weigh???
you fill it with marbles, how much does it weigh???
you fill it with oil, water, concrete etc. how much does it weigh? a gallon is a measurement of volume and only when you know the density of an item can you know the weight per gallon.

If you have a bullet tank with the following diameter (84") and it 27' long or (324"), HOW many gallons would it hold (what is the water capacity of the vessel?)

V = (pi)r^2 x h where h is the height

Breaking down the formula

pi = 3.14159265
r^2 (radious which is 42 half the diameter of 84) = 1764
h = 324

So the formula would be
3.1459265 x 1764 = 5541.7694346 X 324 = 1795533.2968104

The above answer is in cubic inches and a gallon of water
displaces 231 cubic inches so to finish divide

1795533.2968104 by 231 you get 7772.8714147636363636363636363636 Gallons.

If you fill this tank with water it will have a weight of 64,749 lbs

what about gallons of jet fuel to pounds?

Postby Dirtman » Sun Jun 22, 2008 8:07 am

What kind of jet fuel?

Jet A weighs approximately 6.84# per gallon at I.S.A but the specific gravity varies slightly with API batch to batch. The only way to know for sure is to use a hydrometer.

Converting Pounds to Gallons

Postby guest » Fri Dec 12, 2008 4:55 am

Gallons is a measure of volume -- the amount of space something takes up, as measured by a container size. Pounds is a measure of weight -- the amount of gravity placed on the item as measure by a scale.

Materials have a different density -- or weight per volume. A gallon of peanut butter vs a gallon of milk vs a gallon of gas vs a gallon of motor oil vs. a gallon of peanut oil. They'd all take up the same space -- a gallon container, but each would weigh differently.

When someone figures the weight of an aircraft, they have to take into consideration the weight of the fuel and the weight of the oil -- which as has been mentioned are different. You can't determine the weight of trash because it depends on what's in the trash. If the trash container held plastic bags, it would hardly weigh anything. If it held gravel, it would weigh a lot.

If you cannot find a weight for the peanut oil, best best is to actually weight the product: weigh a cup or a quart or a half gallon and then use that figure to determine the weight per gallon.

Industry loose weight averages for 50% rock / 50% run approximately 107.4 pcf (2900 lb/yd3), so approximately 1100 tons. Factors such as moisture content can throw this off considerably.

See http://www.unb.ca/transpo/mynet/mtv20.htm for industry averages for rock and dirt in lb/loose yd3 and kg/loose M3. Weights will vary based on composition, type of rock and moisture content but it should give you an approximation you can use to get you reasonably close.

lbs -> gallons and gallons -> lbs

Postby Chemist » Wed Jul 22, 2009 4:01 am

There is approximately 8.33 lbs in 1 gallon
with a specific gravity of 1 (water)

To convert Gallons to Pounds, multiply the gallons by 8.33 to get LBS.
To convert Pounds to Gallons, divide the pounds by 8.33 to get Gallons.

You can take 8.33 and multiply by the gallon size then multiply by the specific gravity. For Example: 8.33 X 1 gallon X SG1.0047 = 8.37 lbs in one gallon

Each quart is one "quart"er of a gallon. Therefore a gallon has four quarters or quarts and the 1/4 gallon is also a quart so you have 5 quarts of volumn.

I think the question has to be qualified first. As to what gallons and as to what pounds referred to. But to cut the long story short,
Dirtman wrote:At 4º C (60º F), pure water weighs 8.33 lb/gal
As quoted, maybe the best quick answer for that. Whatever is the qualification for that question.

1 liquid US gallon of water = 8.35 pounds
1 gallon UK of water = 10 pounds
1 liquid gallon of honey = 10.85 pounds
1 dry gallon of wheat flour = 4.9 pounds
1 gallon of air = about 0,01 pound
