I have struggled with this calculation as well. I have a co-worker who swears by the following formula. It convert pounds to yards, but can be modifed for your calculation.
First, you need the size of the yarn (square yards, lineal yards, etc)
Assume we use square yards. Your numerator is 1 (36 inches/36 inches)
Let's assume the weight is 3 ounces. This is your denominator.
1/3 = .3333333333. This is your conversion factor
