The UK is (mostly) metric now, but when Imperial was more in use, the US and UK ton were different. The US ton, also called short ton, is 2000 pounds, the UK ton, called long ton was 2240 pounds. So there is a more than 10% difference. (The pound is the same, but not larger units, hundredweights differ in the same ratio, being 1/20 of a ton).
