There's an old saying, "A pint's a pound the world around." Which is true if you're using the English pint. An American pint is a little bit over that.

That statement being apocryphal, We can use the known values of the metric system to find the weight of waster. As the gram is defined as mass of one cubic centimeter of water at its maximum density, what we need to do is convert a pound into grams, (453.59 grams), then, because a gram of water is a cubic centimeter of water, we can convert directly into cubic centimeters.

Next, convert 453.59 cubic centimeters into gallons. There are 3785.41 ccs per gallon - dividing that out gives us 453.59 ccs / 3785.41 ccs = 0.1198 gallons per pound (about 1/8th of a gallon.)

As there are 8 pints per gallon, we can divide 0.1198 by 8, and come up with 0.95861 pints per pound, if you need to be more accurate.

Actually, that saying is more true of an American pint than an Imperial pint. The Imperial gallon was defined (1824) as the volume of 10 lb. of distilled water at 62 degrees F. As a pint is 1/8 gallon, an Imperial pint weighs 1 lb 4 oz. A US gallon weighs about 8.33 lbs, so a pint is pretty close to a pound, as you showed in your numerical analysis.

The "modern" Imperial gallon is a declared value in liters, but is very close to 10 lbs water.
