You can't convert a three-dimensional space (cubic yards) into a two-dimensional space (square feet) directly. You can however, calculate how many square feet it will cover at "x" depth.
It's easier to simplify all units of length into feet. Convert cubic yards into cubic feet by multiplying by 27. If you want the depth in inches, convert inches into feet by dividing by 12.
Divide cubic feet by depth to obtain the area it will cover.
**********************
Example 1: How much area will 97.67 cubic yards cover at a depth of 3 inches?
97.67 cubic yards * 27 = 2637.09 cubic feet;
3 inches / 12 = 0.25 feet
2637.09 / 0.25 = 10548.36 square feet,so;
97.67 cubic yards will fill an area of 10548.36 square feet to a depth of 3 inches

Example 2: I have 97.67 cubic yards of material to place in an area of 2876 square feet. How thick will it be?
97.67 cubic yards * 27 = 2637.09 cubic feet
2637.09 cubic feet / 2876 square feet = 0.92 feet.
0.92 * 12 = 11 inches, so;
97.67 cubic yards will fill an area of 2876 square feet to a depth of 11 inches.
