It's not possible to convert from square yards to cubic yards without having a third dimension.

Lets go through just what the terms mean:

some thing that is 1 yard long is one linear yard.
Something that is one yard long and one yard wide is one square yard
Something that is one yard long, one yard wide, and one yard deep is one cubic yard.

1 yard = 1 ft = 1 Yd
1 yard x 1 yard = 1x1 YdxYd = 1 Yd²
1 yard x 1 yard x 1 yard = 1x1x1 YdxYdxYd = 1 Yd³

In actuallity, the bags have to have some thickness, or they'd not be able to hold anything. they have cubic measurements. Say your bag is two feet wide by three feet long and three inches thick: three inches is 1/4 of a foot, so thats 0.25 feet. multiplying that out gives us: s 2x3x0.25 = 1.5 square feet of mulch.

There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard:

1 yd³ = 1 yd x 1 yd x 1 yd
1 yd = 3 ft
1 yd³ = 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft
1 yd³ = 3x3x3 ftxftxft
1yd³ = 27 ft³

So 1.5 square feet is 0.056 square yards.

1.5 ft³
----------- = 0.056 yd³
27 ft³/yd³

Need help How to convert square feet into cubic yards

Postby Newbie » Thu Mar 17, 2005 4:56 am

How does one convert square feet into cubic yards?

I need enough soil to cover an area 60feet long x 28feet wide at a depth
of 5inches.

That really isn't square feet. The 5" depth is 5/12 of a foot so you need 60' x 28' x 5/12' = 700 cu. ft.

There are 27 cu ft in a cu. yard (3 x 3 x 3)
so 700/27 = 25.9 cu yds.

That assumes the dirt doesn't fluff up or pack down as you work it, which won't be strictly true.
