I don't think the government has the will to FORCE a switch.
The metric system became legal for use in 1866. Some laws in 1975 and 1988 more clearly state it is the "preferred measurement system" for the United States, but other laws say it is voluntary and the Feds can't force anybody.
Some industries like automotive have completely switched over because of their worldwide operations, other like domestic aircraft are hardcore FPS.
Of the two companies I worked for, one went metric in the early 70's, the other was metric when I joined them. Others haven't started.
