It appears the formula you need is for the area of a circle = Pi x r squared (i.e. multiplied by itself), where r = radius of the circle. Pi = 3.142 (approx) [often taken as 22/7].
So for your problem the area = 6 sq inches, so working backwards:
6/Pi = 1.910 = r squared, so r = square root of 1.910 = 1.382inches. This is the radius of your circle, so its diameter (=2 x r) = 2.764 inches or approx 2 3/4 inches.
