i would be grateful for some help in working out the following calculation.
i wish to find out how many megalitres and cubic metres would be involved applying 1/2 inch of water to 12 acres.

First, lets get all the numbers into common units:
1 acre is 4,046.825 m²
1/2 in. is 1.27 cm or 0.0127 m
so...
4,046.825 m² x 0.0127 m = 51.3749 m³
There are 1,000 l per m³ so...
51.3749 m³ x 1000 l/m³ = 51,374.9 l, or 51.3749 megaliters
