To figure this out, you need to know the atomic weight of Iron. A trip to your periodic chart will give you an answer of 55.85 grams per mole.
If you have a solution of iron at 40 µg/ml, then we can convert thusly:
40 µg / 55.85 g/mol =
0.00004 g / 55.85 g/mol = 7.16e-7 mol = .716 µmol
to convert ml to liters we'll use 1 ml = 0.001 l so:
.716 µmol / 0.001 l = 716 µmol/l
