Dear convert-me.com forum visitors,

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.

All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on convert-me.com FaceBook page

Thank you for being with us and sorry for any inconveniences this could caused.

I have to compare and determine the best price for a product, one vendor is using gallons the other pounds. How do I break this down to determine who is giving me the best price?

You need need to know its weight to volume ratio.

A gallon of water weights 8.34 pounds. Consider what a gallon of lead would weigh... 94.56 lbs!

The figure you need is Specific Gravity. Water has a specific gravity of 1, where lead has a specific gravity of 11.34.

The easiest way to do what you want is to convert weight of the the first vendors product to grams, and the volume of the second vendors procudt to ml. Next multiply the volume in ml by the specific gravity. That will give you the weight of the second vendors product. Now you can compare the two costs using the same standard.

Decide on which basis to compare, pounds or gallons. If pounds, multiply the number of gallons by 8.33 to get pounds. If comparing gallons, divide the number of pounds by 8.33 to get gallons.
